Patagonia Rainbow Trout

Arroyo Pescado Rainbow Trout

here’s a photo of a 20″ rainbow from Arroyo Pescado near Esquel.  this is a photo from few years ago.  the thing is that i’m actually here in Aluminé for a week.  no fishing, but just hanging out with friends and getting ready for a busy fishing season.  i shot some great video of some feeding trout that i will post later.  the satellite internet connection in this little town is like 25 kpbs, i tried to upload a 15 meg file to google yesterday, and it failed 3 times for some reason, so i’ll wait til i get back to buenos aires to do it, in a few days.  talk to y’all later.  -joey       photo © Joey Lin

Crazy Bass Photo - by Erich Schlegel

bass in mid air

this is a photo by my friend Erich Schlegel, shot years ago at Decker Lake near Austin. Erich is a badass senior staff photographer at the Dallas Morning News. can’t remember why he was here that day, but i remember him telling me that he saw this bass attacking dragon flies in the late afternoon, so he set up and shot this impressive shot. i asked him for this picture again because i lost it on an old computer that crashed. his only remark was ‘Need to go back and
reshoot that pond. I know I can get a better pic.’….photo © Erich Schlegel. cheers.

Home Coming, South Andros, Bahamas

home coming south andros bahamas bair's lodge

ok, guys. i know this is a stretch, but hey. it’s early november and i’m stuck in Buenos Aires (not complaining too much) preparing for the upcoming Argentina fishing season. i have lots of clients coming down, so i’m sitting in front of a computer, invoicing, making itineraries, etc…i can’t be on the river every day, but don’t worry, soon i’ll be doing nothing but fishing.

in the mean time, i was looking for some weird photo or something to post. i could go back and post a lot of things that relate to Argentina fishing, but ran across this photo. interesting back story. this is from 2003 or so, can’t remember. but anyway, i was with a group of guys from Waco, fishing at Bair’s Lodge in South Andros. one of the veteran guides at the time was Nat. he guided all day, ran his restaurant at night, and then went night fishing for his restaurant at wee hours of the morning. then got up and guided again the next day. hard core. supposedly to support all his kids. the story goes that he even fathered 2 different sets of twins BORN ON THE SAME DAY with TWO DIFFERENT WOMEN!!!

anyway, this is a photo of some young ladies outside his restaurant. they were there for home-coming, which i don’t know exactly what that is. but i guess it means they left the island and on a certain day of the year, they ‘come home’. no, they don’t work at HOOTERS. photo © Joey Lin. cheers.

Back in Argentina!!

Mapuche with Sheep in Patagonia

hey, guys…

i’m back in Argentina.  have my apartment and my office back in Buenos Aires.  will be a couple weeks before i get into any fishing areas, i’ve got a lot of work to do to prepare for clients who will be coming the next several months.  also, have some friends from Austin here right now.  otherwise, i’d be up in Corrientes with my friends who left yesterday to fish for Dorado.  i’ll post pix from there when they get back, if they have good fishing.  supposedly it’s crazy up there right now, people catching Dorado and Pacu up to 20 pounds.

anyway, here’s a photo i shot years ago near Aluminé, actually in the Mapuche Indian Reservation (Ruca Choroi to be exact).  this is a native herding his sheep.  this photo was published in Wild on the Fly magazine for a piece we did on the NORTHERN PATAGONIA FISHING CLUB (go to ‘press’ section to view a copy of the article).  photo © Joey Lin 2003.  cheers.

Dead Bonefish

Dead Bonefish

ok, this is from a few years back.  this is Tee, a guide at Bair’s Lodge in South Andros.  i think this is somewhere back in Little Creek.  this was about a 6 pound bonefish that i had caught and released.  as the tired fish snaked away slowly, i noticed a small shark following 50 feet behind, obviously sensing a weary fish even from that distance.  the bonefish headed toward a small creek inlet where a minute later, the water erupted.  as soon as i looked back over, a pool of blood clouded the water, and this half of the bonefish surfaced.  Tee quickly moved over to fetch the remains and took it home to eat.  bonefish are supposedly good to eat, but full of bones (not as bad on the bigger ones).  the guides don’t kill them often, so i guess this was a rare ‘treat’.

Damsel Fly on the Llano River

Llano River Damsel Fly

ok, this is just an excuse for me to post some old photos that i liked. one thing about doing this blog thing is that i finally have an outlet for my photos. some of you may know that i used to work professionally as a photographer before i left the scene sometime around 1995 to pursue my life in fly fishing. don’t know if that was the right move, felt like it at the time, though.

anyhow, this is from about 10 years ago. i was out wade-fishing on the Llano River with some buddies and it started to rain.  i set my rod down to take pictures or pee or whatever, can’t really remember.  but upon return, i noticed a damsel fly that had hatched from it’s nymph form and had crawled onto my Winston rod, trying to dry it’s wings. anyone who is familiar with Texas Hill Country fishing knows how important damsel flies are to Guadalupe Bass and other species. i shot this photo with an Olympus Infinity Stylus, an $80 (at the time) point-and-shoot. perfect for accidentally dropping into the water. i’m too chicken to have more expensive cameras out on the water.

John Erskine’s Big Striper

this is my friend John Erskine.  here is his site:  http://www.jerskine.com/

here is the funny story of how he one-upped everyone on the guadalupe river this particular day last december, catching the new fly rod state record striper.  this fish weighed in at 36.65 pounds!!  click HERE for the full story.  photo by Shea McClanahan, i think.  cheers.

Photo of the Week - Puffer Fish

not sure if these are really called Puffer Fish or not, but a few years ago, i took a couple groups to Bair’s Lodge in South Andros, Bahamas. really great bonefishing there, and a fantastic lodge. there are even good bonefish to be caught in the water right in front of the lodge. anyhow, i was walking one early morning after breakfast and before we launched to go fishing, and shot this photo of these ‘puffer fish’ cruising the edge in shallow water right in front of the lodge. i think it’s a cute photo.

Photo of the Week - Carp Lips

ok, this is the first ‘photo of the week’.  i’m doing this to force myself to post something at least once a week, especially right now, i’m in between fishing seasons.  plus it gives me an excuse to highlight some photos i happen to like from the past.

Carp Frontal

this is a carp.  i like to carp fish with a fly rod.  this happens to be on the edge of lake travis near austin.  turns out that when the lake is up in the spring, carp cruise the flats to spawn on the flooded edges, in the grass.  they tail just like redfish, and you can sight fish to them.  i suppose the most prominent feature of carp are their disgusting lips.  i took this photo to show that, i guess.  kind of funny, don’t you think?
